How it works

Pick a size and palette
Set the width in stitches and the most colors you want to use. Every color is matched to the nearest DMC floss, and fewer colors means fewer skeins to buy.
Keep editing
Open the result in the editor as a fully editable chart, not a locked export. Fix stray stitches, swap floss colors, add backstitch outlines and text on separate layers, then export a printable PDF with symbols and a floss key.

- How does the photo conversion work?
- The converter stretches the photo's contrast, sharpens fine detail, shrinks it to your grid, and groups the pixels into the number of colors you chose. Each color is then matched to the closest DMC floss, and the chart is redrawn in those flosses. With Crisp edges on, it skips the contrast and sharpening steps and smooths flat areas instead. In the same browser, the same photo and settings always produce the same chart.
- What makes a photo convert well?
- Clear subjects, good contrast, and simple backgrounds chart best. Portraits work well at larger grid sizes (150+ stitches wide); logos and illustrations convert cleanly even at small sizes. For logos and drawings, turn on Crisp edges to keep flat areas of color clean.
- Does it use real DMC colors?
- Yes. Every color in the chart is a DMC stranded cotton number, and the list under the preview shows how many stitches use each one. Two photo colors that match the same floss are merged, so you may get a few fewer colors than you asked for.
- Do I need an account?
- Not to convert a photo. The editor needs a free account, and the chart you made here opens in it when you sign up in the same browser.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. The conversion runs in your browser and the photo stays on your device. Only the finished chart goes into the editor, and only if you choose to open it there.
