- What does fabric count mean in cross stitch?
- Fabric count is the number of stitches per linear inch. 14ct aida has 14 stitches per inch, so a 140-stitch-wide chart finishes at 10 inches wide. Higher counts (16ct, 18ct, 22ct) give a smaller, denser finish; lower counts (11ct) give a larger one.
- How much extra fabric should I add around a cross stitch design?
- The usual rule is a 3-inch margin on every side — enough to fit a hoop while you stitch and to stretch or lace the piece when framing. The calculator shows the recommended cut size with that margin included.
- How do I measure crochet or knitting gauge?
- Work a swatch at least 6 inches square in your pattern stitch, then count how many stitches and rows fit in a 4-inch (10 cm) square in the middle. Enter those two numbers and your chart size to see the finished dimensions.
- Why are stitches and rows entered separately for crochet and knitting?
- Unlike cross stitch, crochet and knit stitches aren't square — a single crochet is usually wider than it is tall. Entering stitches per 4 inches and rows per 4 inches separately keeps the finished-size estimate honest.
