Turn a photo into a knitting chart
Choose a photo and get a colorwork chart with cells shaped like stockinette stitches, which are wider than they are tall, so the knitted piece keeps the photo's proportions. You don't need an account to convert.
The conversion runs in your browser. Your photo is not uploaded.
How it works
Drop in a photo
Choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP. The chart is drawn in your browser and redrawn when you change a setting, and the photo isn't uploaded.
Set the width and colors
Pick how many stitches wide the piece should be and the most colors you want to knit with. Fewer colors means fewer ends to weave in.
Keep editing
Open the chart in the editor to tidy stray stitches, recolor, and export a printable chart with symbols and a color key.
Frequently asked
- Why aren't the chart cells square?
- A stockinette stitch is wider than it is tall, so a picture charted on square cells knits up squat. That's why knitter's graph paper has rectangular cells. The converter uses cells about a third wider than they are tall and adds rows to match, so the knitted piece keeps the photo's proportions.
- Is this for Fair Isle or intarsia?
- A chart made from a photo usually has more colors in each row than traditional Fair Isle, which works two colors per row. Intarsia suits large blocks of color, and duplicate stitch suits small details added after knitting. For stranded knitting, set a low color count and turn on Crisp edges for bolder shapes.
- How big will the finished piece be?
- That depends on your yarn, needles, and tension. Knit a swatch, count the stitches and rows over 4 inches, and enter them in the gauge calculator to see the finished size.
- Does it pick real yarn colors?
- No. Yarn lines each have their own colors, so the converter picks the colors that best fit your photo and shows how many stitches use each one. Match them to yarn you have, or change any color in the editor.
- Do I need an account?
- Not to convert a photo. The editor needs a free account, and the chart you made here opens in it when you sign up in the same browser.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. The conversion runs in your browser and the photo stays on your device. Only the finished chart goes into the editor, and only if you choose to open it there.
