Frequently asked
- What does mesh mean on needlepoint canvas?
- Mesh is the number of holes per inch. A tent stitch covers one thread intersection, so on mono canvas the mesh is also the number of stitches per inch. 13 mesh gives 13 stitches to the inch.
- Which mesh is most common?
- You'll mostly see 10, 12, 13, 14 and 18 mesh. Lower numbers mean bigger stitches and quicker progress, higher numbers more detail.
- How much bare canvas should I leave around the design?
- About 2 inches on each side is a common choice. It gives room to mount the canvas on stretcher bars, to pin it out when blocking, and for whoever finishes the piece to work with.
- Can I chart a needlepoint design on graph paper?
- Yes. The cross stitch graph paper tool prints at 10, 13 or 18 squares per inch, so a printed chart matches the canvas size one to one.
